* Explore strategies for avoiding stereotypes and for identifying authentic and culturally relevant children's books.
* Learn about the trending of #WeNeedDiverseBooks, a social media initiative to increase the number of multicultural titles available from publishers.
* Examine recommended titles including this year's Big Read selection "Into the Beautiful North" by Luis Alberto Urrea.
* Discover organizations such as the American Library Association, which offers awards for books that affirm diverse cultural experiences, including disabilities, GLBTQ children and young adults, and for authors and illustrators of African-American and Latino/Latina heritage.
Teachers can earn Free ISBE Professional Development hours.
This event is part of The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
