The Adjunct Council is excited to begin a third year of the Adjunct Council Newsletter. The purpose of the newsletter is to briefly share practical information relevant to adjunct faculty. Inside the quarterly issue, you will find important dates, resources, contact information, adjunct accomplishments, and current news. With each issue, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, we will provide the latest news and resources to keep you updated and informed.

About the Adjunct Council [About the Adjunct Council] Mission of the Adjunct Council [Mission of the Adjunct Council]
The Adjunct Council, which consists of 9 members holding three-year terms, held its first meeting in 2002. The purpose of the Council is to actively participate in University governance initiatives and work to improve the quality of life for adjunct faculty throughout NLU. The Council meets a minimum of 10 times within an academic year, in addition to selected council committees, and annually at Fall Connection.
The Adjunct Council's mission is (a) to represent the professional interests of the adjunct faculty at National Louis University (b) to enhance the adjunct faculty role at National Louis University through active participation in shared governance, (c) to advise the Provost and President on matters that concern the adjunct faculty at NLU.
Adjunct Council Meetings
Adjunct Council meetings are open to all adjuncts. Meetings are held the second Thursday of every month from 3:45pm-5:00pm at the Chicago campus (room #6017) or via Zoom Video Conference where we discuss issues pertinent to the adjunct community. Diagrammer
Diagrammer is an online repository of more than 4000 customizable PowerPoint based diagrams. Diagrams use proximity, scale, color, links to clarify hierarchy and relationships between information, making your message more easily understood. The diagrams are conveniently organized into a filterable list, making it easy to find a diagram suitable for your particular message. All of the diagrams available on Diagrammer are free to download and use.
To get started with Diagrammer, simply visit http://www.duarte.com/diagrammer<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=&msgid=0&act=111111&c=957735&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.duarte.com%2Fdiagrammer> using any modern web browser. Scroll down and you’ll begin to see examples of some of the diagrams available. Clicking the View All Diagrams<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=&msgid=0&act=111111&c=957735&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.duarte.com%2Fdiagrams%2F> link near the bottom of the page will bring you to Diagrammer’s filterable list of diagrams. From here, you can search for diagrams by relationship, diagram style (2d or 3d), and by number of nodes. When you find a diagram you would like to download, select the diagram and a pop up window will appear. Fill in the appropriate information (fake info can work if you are testing this) then click submit and the diagram downloads to your computer.
The diagram downloads as a PowerPoint file, and works a lot like the Smart Art you’re probably already familiar with. It will be interesting to see how you use Diagrammer!

Meet Raquel Garcia, Manager of Adjunct Operations

Raquel Garcia is the newest member of the Provost Office Team as the new Adjunct Operations Manager. This position was originally held by Amy King in Human Resources. Amy King is now the Associate Director of Human Resources, and the Adjunct Operations Manager position has moved to the Provost’s Office. Raquel as the new Adjunct Operations Manager will be the liaison between the adjunct community and the University. She will address adjunct concerns, manage operations, and work to build a greater sense of community among NLU adjunct faculty. She is located on the Chicago campus but will be traveling to other campuses to support the adjunct community.
Raquel has over ten years of experience working in education, curriculum development, and instructional coaching. She’s previously held positions at the Instituto del Progreso Latino as well as Chicago Public Schools. She holds a Bachelor in Arts from Northeastern University and a Master’s of Education from American College of Education. The Office of Teaching and Learning is hosting a faculty forum which will report on phase II of the Blended Learning Summer Action Team research. Phase I of this research investigated NLU student preferences for different course modalities (i.e., F2F, blended, and fully online). Phase II of this research focused on the student learning experiences within and across these modalities. In this forum, faculty will report their findings on the student learning experiences in different course modalities in four domains of study (i.e., Business, Special Education, Early Childhood, and Human Services). Specific questions driving their research include:
1.
How do students achieve the course learning outcomes in each modality?
2.
How do student learning routines vary across course contexts?
3.
How do faculty build relationships in each learning context?
4.
What challenges emerge for students and faculty?

New eNuggets online teaching orientation
The “Online Educator” training for all online instructors is now live. The “Online Educator” training is a part of the adjunct orientation that is required of all adjuncts before they start teaching at NLU. Developed by NLU’s internal instructional design team, faculty, and administrators, these additional eNuggets focus on online teaching at NLU and include strategies and tools you can use to enhance online classroom instruction. For example, information is provided on using Turnitin, adding videos, links, and external content in D2L, using Zoom Webconferencing for office hours, and much more. If you teach online or are interested in learning more about the online learning environment, check out these new eNuggets in the adjunct orientation.

Adjunct Spotlight
Mfon Akpan, CPSA
Mfon Akpan is an adjunct faculty member in the Business Administration (BABA) program at National Louis University. He was recently nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award - Adjunct Faculty at NLU. Mfon also teaches business classes at Robert Morris University, Harold Washington and Olive Harvey Colleges, and Argosy University. He is currently completing his doctoral studies in accounting. He was honored at the Systematic Empowerment Community (SEMCO) graduation at the Liautaud Institute of Illinois on March 10th. This event marked the final state in his moderator training at the Liautaud Institute – University of Illinois at Chicago.
His extensive background working in the financial services sector as well as a MBA (accounting) and a Masters in Accounting and Financial Management (MAFM) prompted him to join the Liautaude Institute to provide SEMCO training to leaders wishing to improve the performance of their organizations using a proven process-based culture change. Mfon Akpan will also be representing NLU at the Teaching of Accounting at Two Year Colleges (TATYC) Conference in May held in Austin, TX.
