It is with much sadness and deep appreciation for his service to NLU and the profession that I let you know of the passing of Dr. Pat McGrath, Professor of Counseling and Human Services in the College of Professional Studies.

Pat served NLU for 30 years, earning the rank of full professor. Pat founded our human services program and played an important part in the development of our counseling program.

Born in Ottawa, IL, Pat was drafted and served in an engineering unit in Viet Nam (where he was exposed to Agent Orange) and was a Disabled American Veteran. Pat returned to school and earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Illinois-Chicago and then an M.S. in Community Mental Health from Northern Illinois University (NIU) followed by an Ed.D. also from NIU.

He was a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a National Certified Counselor and a National Certified Family Therapist and a Clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.

During his active professional career, Pat served in many ways. He was Chairperson of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Grants and Awards Committee at one time and a director of the NIMH Mental Health Training Program at another. He served on the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) 2009 Standards Revision Committee and as the Chair of a number of CACREP Accreditation Teams. Pat also served on the Editorial Board of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counseling (IAMFC) and co-authored IAMFC's first Code of Ethics. He was First Author of "Accessing Awareness, Developing Knowledge; Foundations for Skill in a Multicultural Society," and a past president of the National Organization for Human Service Education.

In addition to his teaching at NLU, over the years Pat served as a director of a residential psychiatric house in Chicago, taught in Alaska's Indigenous Mental Health Worker Training Program, and was the founding Director of the University of Bridgeport's Center for the Study of Aging.

We at National Louis University are grateful for the good fortune of his many contributions as a colleague, teacher, counselor, and professional.

Pat is survived by Denise, his wife of 46 years, two sons, Justin and Zachary, and four brothers, James, Robert, Daniel and Ralph.

Sincerely,
Judah
