NLU faculty, staff and students,

National Louis University is committed to maintaining a safe campus environment. As part of this commitment, a LOCKDOWN DRILL will be held at the Wheeling campus the week of March 14. The drill will last approximately 15 minutes. The drill will be for the Wheeling campus only.

The start of the drill will be announced using the campus public address system. Everyone on the Wheeling campus should shelter-in-place for the duration of the drill. Lockdown procedures are available on the attached pdf, posted in the classrooms, and at www.nl.edu/emergency<http://www.nl.edu/emergency/lockdownprocedures/>.

Once a lockdown is announced, follow these instructions:

  * Remain in or go to the nearest room
  * Close, lock or barricade the door
  * Turn off the lights and stay out of sight
  * Remain quiet and turn off cell phone ringer
  * Account for everyone in the room
  *   Wait for further instructions
  * Do not open the door for anyone
  * Do not answer phones and silence cell phones

The drill will test mechanical door systems, public address systems as well as provide an opportunity for practice and education regarding lockdown procedures to staff, students, faculty and visitors. University officials in identifiable vests will be walking around the Wheeling campus verifying lockdown procedures and monitoring for compliance.

Once the drill is complete, the all clear will be given over the public address system and the campus will return to normal activities.

The Wheeling campus will be closed during the drill and no traffic will be permitted to enter or exit the premises - this includes the use of elevators. Please keep this in mind for meetings and classes that may coincide with the timing of the drill.

NLU realizes an exercise of this nature can be an unwanted distraction; however, it is necessary to maintain the highest level of safety and security for students, staff and visitors. If you have any questions regarding this Lockdown Drill or the Lockdown procedures, please contact Richard Sorenson at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Thank you,

The NLU Emergency Response Team
