NLU Connections

The Connection events that NLU holds three times a year, Fall, Winter, and Spring are a time for faculty and staff to “connect” in a fun, relaxed environment. Food and drinks are provided, and the event moves from campus to campus throughout the year. It was Fall 2014 when adjuncts were first invited to attend. The Adjunct Council, as well as the institution, hope to see adjuncts in attendance to share in the festivities. Emails go out prior to the event with a link to register. Here is an overview of each connection.

Fall Connection, generally held in September near the Chicago campus, starts off the academic year with a day of department/college meetings, then continues with an evening gathering, a dressy affair, with speeches, welcomes, and awards.

Winter Connection, generally held in December near the Lisle campus, has a business casual feel and promotes a holiday feeling.

Spring Connection, generally held in May is a casual affair held outside on the Wheeling Campus grounds (weather permitting). The relaxed atmosphere includes a live band, food hot off the grill, and a T-shirt and jeans attire.

Adjunct Spotlight

Sharon McNeely, CPSA, was hired for adjunct work in 2013 with the goal of helping to build a new general education program. She was fortunate to have many superb guides as she developed new courses and explored options to support students who were transitioning into NLU. Sharon was pleased that so many people supported adjuncts, and while she did hit bumps in the road, they were bumps, not roadblocks! In 2014, Sharon was invited to serve on the Adjunct Council (AC) and is currently working on a task force to develop aspects of the observation and evaluation processes for adjuncts.

“I have attended not only AC meetings, but meetings of other campus groups on behalf of AC. While it was clear to me that there were many good things going on for adjuncts, there were missing pieces, and some things could be better. I thought that there had to be more seamless ways to provide needed information to other adjuncts who were probably asking the same questions that I was. I welcomed the chance to work with others to develop some of the just-in-time training for adjuncts.”

Sharon is a retired full professor from Northeastern Illinois University, having done all the things professors do: teach, research, write, and serve. When she decided she was ready to work again, NLU provided her with a way to grow, to heal, to embrace new quests and to ask yet more questions!

In addition to adjunct work, she has her own service learning working to develop curriculum to help people in Liberia learn entrepreneurship for developing their own businesses and building better health for themselves and their country. She is just beginning to connect with the NLU community and share more about that learning adventure. She is delighted to discover that there are people at NLU that know the crisis there and are full of ideas! As the transforming Liberia learning centers get built, she hopes to incorporate lots of what they are sharing.

Most importantly, Sharon thanks three people for her journey to NLU: her mom who is an NLU alumnus, Dr. Katie McKnight, a colleague who sings NLU praises, and Dr. Margaret Stemler, a former student who, as a guidepost of all things NLU, encouraged her to explore being involved with an organization that was setting new directions and redefining excellence!

“As we enrich ourselves, we enrich our students. As we enrich our students, we enrich the world. I know that adjunct work is not easy. I know that sometimes others push and pull us in various directions. I hope all adjuncts will reach out and embrace what NLU offers. Please attend some of the ongoing events. Reach out and meet others. Share what you need and want from the NLU experience. Let your Adjunct Council members know what we can do to help. Share and grow with us!”
